Could selfies put your biometric data at risk?

Quite how many readers of New Electronics and visitors to its website are selfie enthusiasts is something we haven’t researched. But I’m going to stick my neck out and suggest that it’s not that many.

But if you are a selfie enthusiast, here’s something for you to think about. A researcher has captured fingerprints of someone flashing the ‘peace sign’ in a selfie taken using a high resolution camera. The fingerprints were recognisable at 3m and obviously associated with a face.

With fingerprint log-ins becoming more widely used on phones and things like banking apps, the potential risks are clear, says researcher Isao Echizen from Japan’s National Institute of Informatics.
