European collaboration worked for ARM

Europe has been in the news recently, with talk of €100billion schemes to propel its microelectronics industry to the top of the pile and the more modestly funded ECSEL project. The latter will have a budget of €4.8bn for its 10 year programme to explore electronic components and systems.

In another blog, we've talked about the UK being seemingly reluctant to take part in European projects over the years, although interest is now growing. Sir Robin Saxby, talking earlier this year, recalled: "In the early days, ARM's first important customer was Nokia – and we collaborated through a European programme." Since those early days, ARM technology has found its way into the vast majority of mobile phones. No wonder Sir Robin said: "I'm a big fan of European R&D programmes."
