While New Electronics tends to look at things immediately related to EVs, such as overcoming range anxiety – how far your EV will go before the battery is flat – spare a thought for those companies in the traditional automotive supply chain.
According to Andy Allcock, editor of New Electronics’ sister magazine Machinery, EVs are not only likely to have a significant impact on companies manufacturing internal combustion engine parts, but also on those making and selling machine tools and the tools those machines employ.
The automotive sector worldwide is the largest consumer of machine tools and associated tooling. Could it be that another industrial sector with significant economic impact might delay what appears to be progress to an EV only future?
And here’s another interesting factoid which Andy has discovered. If all the vehicles in Germany are replaced by electrically powered equivalents, they will consume 150GW – twice as much power as is currently used in the country.
Clearly, there are more issues around EVs than range anxiety.
