The six successful projects – led by SMEs, universities and local authorities – represent UK innovation, resources and expertise at its best, according to the Government. These projects, it says, will test 5G across a range of applications, including smart farming with drones, using the IoT to improve healthcare in the home, increasing manufacturing productivity and maximising the future benefits of self-driving cars.
Part of a £1billion commitment through the Digital Strategy, these projects form part of the Government’s stated ambition to accelerate the deployment of next generation digital infrastructure and highlight new 5G business opportunities.
The Digital Strategy, launched in March 2017, is intended to help drive the UK’s connectivity, telecommunications and digital sectors and to invest in the industries, infrastructure and skills which will form a key component of the UK’s Industrial Strategy.
While it’s too early to say whether this strategy is delivering, there are currently 60,000 tech businesses in the UK.
Despite economic and political uncertainties, the UK still remains the number one location for tech investment in Europe.
