While a new report, “The Promise and Potential of 5G,” from business information provider IHS Markit says that 5G will help to set the stage for incredible change, it also warns that that there are varied and sometimes conflicting interpretations of what 5G is and what to expect from it.
This will have an impact on consumers but also make it increasingly difficult for industry’s ability to measure itself against a standard set of 5G expectations and requirements.
The report says that clarity, regarding what 5G is and when each capability will be available, needs to be established for both consumers and the ecosystem.
According to Francis Sideco, vice president, technology at IHS Markit: “Few people understand the iterative nature of major technology rollouts such as the one we are going through now with 5G - a process involving multiple major updates that will add new capabilities in the coming years.”
The answer appears to be ensuring a better understanding of the implications of each of these roll-outs and the impact each stage of 5G’s development will have on consumers and companies.
A call then, for greater clarity in a confusing landscape.
