Apparently, it's part of experiment to put into practice face recognition technology and a language module which allows the robot to partake in real time 'conversations'.
Researchers behind the project suggest that embedding the Ibn Sina Robot in a social situation – ie: Facebook - could potentially give rise to relationships developing between humans and androids. However, some might suggest that adorning the automaton's face with a menacing glower may put off prospective acquaintances. Others may even suggest that Mr Ibn Sina is ever so slightly intimidating.
However, such concerns don't seem to bother the developers and I personally found him very charming and a great joy to chat with. Indeed, we are already on each others' Christmas card lists.
