Leadership skills lacking
Despite the fact that the UK's workforce is more skilled than ever, the National Strategic Skills Audit has determined that 1.7million people don't have the skills necessary to do their job properly.
For once, it wasn't just employees who were the target of the criticism, although the Audit found technical skills aren't what they could be. This time, the UK's leadership and management skills were alslo found wanting; in particular, the ability to drive new product development and commercialisation. And that's important, because UK companies are being urged to develop innovative products and to develop themselves into global players.
There's been a lot of focus on training the workforce for the future, but if the management can't take advantage of those skills, it's pretty much a waste of time and money.
