Nanotechnology - EU:1 UK:0
London South Bank University will be encouraged by <a href="http://www.newelectronics.co.uk/article/26991/UK-academics-awarded-EU-funding-for-nanotechnology-research.aspx"><u>EU funding</u></a> of £1.5million for its environmental design projects – including major research into the practical uses of nanotechnology in manufacturing and industry.
The investment will be particularly welcome following Science Minister, David Willetts' recent announcement that the UK's 24 nanotech centres are 'most unlikely' to survive the next 18 months.
With the team focusing on the development of new nanomaterials for the battery, solar cell and energy sectors, the research is both innovative and environmentally friendly. So is an Anglo/Euro divide emerging? While European Trade Unions are actively pursuing the responsible development of nanotechnology, Willetts described such research centres as 'sub-critical'.
