Sources, speaking to Reuters, have said that preparations are already in hand to start production in 2025. So far, Nvidia’s Blackwell chips have been manufactured at TSMC's facilities in Taiwan.
The agreement would secure another customer for TSMC's Arizona facility, which is scheduled to start volume production next year - Apple and Advanced Micro Devices have already signed up for customers.
TSMC, which is the world's largest contract chipmaker, is investing tens of billions of dollars in building three facilities in Phoenix and the project has won significant subsidies from the US administration as part of the CHIPS Act.
The news comes as Nvidia has announced that it has signed an agreement with the Vietnamese government setting up an AI research and development centre and an AI data centre in the country.
Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang said that the company wanted to expand its partnerships with Vietnam's top tech firms and support the country in training talent for developing AI and digital infrastructure when he made a visit to Hanoi last year.
Nvidia is ending 2024 as it started. Demand for its new Blackwell chips, despite some production issues, is robust so as we enter 2025 it looks very much like more of the same for the standout performer of this year.
