Radio active
Austrian firm Abatec has been working on the implementation of rfid to help coaches and professional skiers analyse their performance during training.
Antennas are placed on the front and back of athletes’ skis. These then send signals to receiving stations placed at regular intervals alongside the ski slope that analyse the time a signal needs to travel from the antenna to a station. A skier’s exact location can then be tracked by computers and the exact position of the skis can be calculated every millisecond.
No news has emerged as to whether the British Olympic ski jumping team plans to adopt this radio frequency technology. However, rumours abound that Eddie ‘The Eagle’ Edwards is planning his comeback in Calgary by careering down practise slopes while Wake up to Wogan is blasted at him at regular intervals. These rumours are, so far, unconfirmed.
