According to the report only 25% of safety critical device developers follow all industry recommended software development practices for increasing safety.
Worryingly, the survey found that of the embedded systems developers working on internet-connected or IoT projects, 22% do not list security as a product requirement for their current project, even as systems become more complex and more difficult to secure.
While the survey suggests that modest improvements are being made when it comes to making security a design consideration during product development, that figure should be a concern.
Furthermore, according to the research fewer than half of embedded engineers designing for the IoT encrypt their data.
With the growing number of security breaches and attacks that are coming to light, we may have to start describing the IoT as being the ‘Internet of Insecure Things’.
