In their experiment, two octocopters flew around the outside of an enclosed, four-sided brick house whose interior was unknown to the drones.
While in flight, one copter continuously transmitted a Wi-Fi signal, which was measured by the other copter.
After flying pre-planned air routes, the copters used the imaging methodology developed by the researchers to create 3D high resolution images of the objects inside the house. And it worked – the 3D image closely matched the actual area.
Just as superman uses his power for the greater good, so this technology could be used for emergency search-and-rescue missions – hang on Lois, we’re on our way!
