Tunnel vision?

It appears that Transport for London (TfL) has abandoned plans to provide mobile communications services in the underground part of the Tube network.

Hands up anyone who thinks this is a bad thing. It's one of those areas where there are good and bad sides. Taking the 'bad' side first, London likes to maintain its 'swinging' image and to be a capital city in which innovation and progress can be relied upon. So it would seem to be almost a 'given' that mobile coverage would be extended to the famous Tube system. However, TfL says the scheme would be 'prohibitively expensive' at the moment. On the good side, the decision means the Tube will remain one of the rapidly shrinking numbers of mobile free places – even if the noise levels in the Tube are such that, even if you had the ability to make a call, the chances are you wouldn't be able to hear a thing, courtesy of the rattling carriages, grinding wheels and so on. Blackberry addicts would also be able to convince themselves that the world was continuing to turn while they were making their subterranean journey. Until such times as London does get an underground mobile network, Blackberry users will have to sprint up the escalators and burst into the daylight before they can resume their habit.
