The environmental, societal and commercial potential offered by smart infrastructure in the UK and abroad is vast. It is something that is well realised by industry and government. The latter's focus on Connected and Autonomous Vehicles, Smart Cities and the Internet of Things is good evidence of this. Most excitingly, it is an area where the UK is well-positioned to be a global leader. It is in response to this opportunity that we are launching SmarterUK – the UK's first, independent cross-industry group championing the development of smart infrastructure.
We are absolutely delighted to announce that the Secretary of State for Communities and Local Government, Greg Clark MP has agreed to deliver a keynote at the launch event. The Secretary of State will be joined by SmarterUK's new Chairman, Dan Byles, and Julian David, the CEO of techUK and other industry representatives (TBC).
The launch of SmarterUK reflects the evolution of techUK's SmartGrid GB initiative that was launched back in 2011. As SmarterUK, we intend to continue SmartGrid GB's existing work in the Energy & Utilities space but we'll also be branching out into two further areas: Transport and Smart Cities. And we will be establishing three new work streams to reflect these areas accordingly.
