SoS Safety – Safety in Systems of Systems

Systems of Systems (SoS) are becoming an essential part of the engineering landscape. At the same time it has become clear that the result of combining systems produces something more complex and subtle: just examining the behaviour of the individual systems is not sufficient to determine the behaviour of a SoS. In fact a SOS may display a combination of unexpected characteristics, such as emergent behaviour, autonomy of systems contributing to a SoS, and dynamic collaboration among them. These can present the safety community with challenges both of analysis and assurance. This seminar will explore these challenges. Speakers will include Prof Michael Henshaw, leader of the Engineering Systems of Systems Research Group at Loughborough University and Prof Peter Johnson of the University of Bath, as well as other academics researching in this emerging area and engineers, from the defence, healthcare and rail industries, explaining how they are meeting the challenges in real life.
