How board support packages help to avoid the stalemate of hardware versus software compatibility. By Mike Richardson.
There’s an old proverb that says life is like a game of chess, changing with every move. The same can be said for the application of the board support package (bsp). With the right stratagem and calculated moves, a bsp can help customers slash their development times, lower costs significantly and get their design to market before their opponents have thought about their next moves.
More than just a pawn in a game, the bsp is vital in helping system designers make decisions early in the development process. This is due to an increasing trend in the high integration density of modern processes, which means the availability of ready to use hardware and software platforms is more important than ever. What’s more, customers now have smaller development resources, so design teams are looking for more support from their suppliers by putting the pressure on them to provide ‘plug and play’ solutions.
This has seen a booming market amongst third party system integrators and reference quality bsp suppliers in developing the various interfaces and the provision of uprated production quality drivers needed to enable rapid development of the customers’ software to effect a rapid product time to market.
