The industrial semiconductor segment grew 35% in 2010, with Texas Instruments taking the largest market share, according to a new IHS iSuppli report.
According to the market analyst, 2010 saw the industrial semiconductor sector outgrow wireless, computers and consumer electronics, making it the second fastest growing semiconductor market after automotive. Despite an H2 2010 slowdown, IHS believes this momentum will continue in 2011, with double digit growth anticipated until 2017.
TI earned $1.79billion in industrial electronics semiconductor revenue, giving it a 6.5% market share. IHS suggests that this was due in part to a broad product offering, with products available in segments such as automation, medical, energy and military.
Jacobo Carrasco Heres, industrial electronics analyst at IHS said: "The company also benefitted from its strong product offerings in analogue, microcontrollers and digital signal processing." Heres added that TI's acquisition of National Semiconductor in Q3 2011 will reinforce the company's hold on the segment for another year.
Industrial electronics semiconductors include discrete, optical, sensors/actuators and microcontrollers. Integrated circuits in the analogue, microcomponents, logic and memory sectors are also counted.
According to IHS, the leading five companies in the industrial electronics semiconductor arena in 2010 had revenues ranging between $1bn and $2bn, while the top 10 suppliers had combined revenues of $11.45bn – approximately 42% of a market worth $27.46bn.
STMicroelectronics had $1.59billion in industrial electronics semiconductor revenue and a 5.8% market share. While TI ranked highly in several segments, it failed to take the top spot in any single submarket. In comparison, ST held the top spot in areas such as manufacturing process and automation, and was also number one in the medical arena.
Third place went to Infineon Technologies, with $1.42bn in revenue and 5.2% of the market. Infineon was the top supplier in the energy segment. In fourth place was Intel with $1.21bn - 3% of the chipmaker's total semiconductor revenue. Intel accounted for 4.4% of the industrial electronics market. Close behind Intel was Analog Devices with 4.3% market share. ADI had revenue in 2010 amounting to $1.19bn.
The rest of the top 10, in descending order, were Renesas Electronics, Toshiba, NXP Semiconductors, Maxim Integrated Products and Mitsubishi.
