3G phone may cost less than $100
NXP and Purple Labs have released a 3G Linux reference feature phone offering video telephony, music playback, high speed internet browsing and video streaming. According to the companies, the phone could cost less than $100.
Created as a reference design for manufacturers creating entry level 3G handsets, the Purple Magic reference phone is based on NXP’s Nexperia Cellular System Solution 7210 for 3G, coupled with Purple Labs’ Linux suite. The design is available as a fully integrated, turnkey solution and production of an initial quantity of fully working phones has enabled Purple Labs to undertake further testing and validation, reducing investment and time to market for OEMs and ODMs.
According to Purple Labs ceo Simon Wilkinson, entry level 3G phones have recently been selling for between $120 and $145. “The Purple Magic design now enables manufacturers to deliver compelling 3G products at a transfer price of less than $100.”
