Achronix to build fpgas on Intel’s 22nm process technology

Achronix is planning to develop what it calls the most advanced fpgas using Intel's 22nm process technology. Using this approach, the company says its Speedster22i FPGA family will 'shatter existing limitations', allowing cost effective production of high performance devices with more than 2.5million look up tables, equivalent to an asic with more than 20m gates.

"Intel has the best process technology in the world and we are privileged to have formed this strategic relationship, which enables simultaneous improvements in speed, power, density and cost," said John Lofton Holt, pictured, Achronix' ceo. "The combination of the 22nm process and advanced fpga technology from Achronix enables Speedster22i to eclipse other fpga solutions expected to hit the market in the next few years." Achronix says Speedster22i will be suitable for a range of applications in the telecommunication, networking, industrial and consumer markets. Additionally, it will be the first commercial fpga family that can be manufactured in the US, making it the suitable for applications requiring 'on shore' silicon. Intel's 22nm process technology will also extend the boundaries of fpga speed and power efficiency, says Achronix, enabling a tripling of performance, while halving power consumption and cost.
