Afdec says component sales beginning to slow

Figures released by afdec, the component distribution group within the Electronic Components Supply Network (ECSN) show a small increase in billings in August 2010 compared to the previous month and a continuing improvement on the same month in 2009.
According to ECSN chairman Adam Fletcher, pictured, bookings for semiconductor and passive products is beginning to slow and will continue to do so for the rest of the year, possibly becoming negative in the first quarter of 2011. "The decline in the book to bill ratio below unity in August 2010 suggests the process has already started," said Fletcher. "Effectively communicating electronic components needs within the supply network is essential in today's market. I applaud the focus that ECSN members are putting on this particular aspect of their business and urge them to maintain this momentum. I do, however, see a need to improve availability whilst minimising inventory."
Total monthly billings in August were 0.2% more than in July and 31.3% higher than in August 2009. Year on year increases by product group were: semiconductors, 42%; passives, 21.2%; electromechanical, 39.3%; and component assemblies, 11.4%. However, afdec's other products group showed a 31.3% decline.
