Atmel unveils 'revolutionary' flexible touch sensor
Microcontroller specialist, Atmel has announced a 'revolutionary' new sensor platform that it claims will enable a new generation of smartphones and tablets.
XSense is a flexible, film based touch sensor based on a proprietary roll to roll metal mesh technology. It is being offered as a high performance alternative to existing touch sensors and, according to the company, will enable the development of thinner, lighter and edgeless touch devices.
Benefits of the new device include enhanced noise immunity, low sheet resistance, low power consumption, 'flawless' touch performance and low cost.
"Our groundbreaking XSense technology transforms the touch experience for users of new smartphones, tablets and other touch enabled products," said Atmel president and ceo Steve Laub. "XSense launches a new era of touch design, enabling our customers to redefine touch and to create a new class of products that were previously only imaginable.
The new sensors are sampling now, with production quantities expected to be available in Q3 2012.
