The Little Box Challenge was launched in 2014 after Google teamed up with the IEEE in search of an approach that could shrink a kW scale inverter from the size of a cool-box to the size of a small laptop.
CE+T’s solution achieved 145W/in3 – almost tripling the competition’s original target of 50W/in3. The design, which uses readily available technology, also fits in a volume of 13.77in3, again better than the target of 40in3.
Robert Eyben, CE+T’s CEO, said: “Winning the Google Littlebox Challenge presents us with a head-start to address the crucial improvements required in power backup. We identified some critical and necessary design alterations and, through this innovation, we will change the future of electricity, power and even Smart Home technology.”
The team began working on its design in September 2014, with rigorous testing during the competition’s final stage taking place at the US National Renewable Energy Laboratory.
