Camera system processes images in similar way to humans

Researchers from the Fraunhofer Institute for Applied Information Technology FIT have developed an automatic camera system that provides human like capabilities when identifying and processing moving images.

Called Smart Eyes, the system can analyse video data in real time and immediately point out salient features. The system hardware consists of a fixed surveillance camera and two 'ultra active' stereo cameras. These can fix on and follow various points very quickly in succession – but can also zoom in. Innovative software ascertains the degree of movement for each pixel, storing typical models. The system uses these models to identify events and classify them. The application picks out salient events and focuses on these using the active stereo cameras.
