Compound eye features vision processing
There are many applications in which motion detection is an important element, including robotics, home automation, surveillance and medical instrumentation. However, while the single lens eyes currently used provide better resolution, they lack a suitable field of view.
Looking to address this issue, the CurvACE project has developed a curved artificial compound eye. Alongside a larger field of view with negligible distortion, CurvACE features embedded and programmable vision processing.
According to CurvACE, compound eyes are useful for motion detection in tasks such as collision avoidance, distance estimation and landing. CurvACE features a panoramic, hemispherical field of view and neuromorphic photoreceptors that allow motion perception in a wide range of environments, ranging from full sun to moonlight.
The CurvACE consortium features EPFL at Lausanne, Fraunhofer Institute at Jena, Université de Tuebingen, CNRS and Aix-Marseille Université.
