Consortium gets £5million for silicon photonics research
A research consortium led by the University of Surrey has won a £5million grant from the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) to work on silicon photonics.
Other collaborators include St Andrews University, Leeds University, Warwick University and Southampton University, along with QinetiQ and Intel, whose earlier work is pictured. The consortium aims to contribute to the ‘second silicon revolution’ by building on work that has already been demonstrated by the partners.
Professor Graham Reed from the University of Surrey emphasised the importance of the grant. “We are delighted that the EPSRC has given us this exciting opportunity to contribute to the development of silicon photonics to a level where it can have a positive impact upon people’s lives. As a team we are committed to providing technology suitable for industrial takeup.”
