Could higher frequency range mean safer roads?
Infineon Technologies is coordinating a project to significantly increase driving safety by making reliable radar systems available in all vehicle classes.
The three year Radar on Chip for Cars (RoCC) project promotes the wide use of modern safety technologies has a budget of over €17million and supported by companies such as BMW Forschung und Technik, Continental, Daimler and Robert Bosch.
The companies will work together to develop integrated automotive radar sensor systems in the frequency range of 76 to 81GHz for both long range (up to 250metres) and short range (up to 20metres) systems. Currently, short range automotive radar sensors, typically use ultra wide band technology at 24GHz.
The RoCC project aims to convert the system to 79GHz but still deliver at the same cost as current systems.
