Crystal solution offers 'unmatched performance'

In a bid to strengthen its role in the consumer GPS market, frequency control specialist Rakon has announced the RXT2520AT, which it claims enables the high performance required in specific GPS and cellular communications as an alternative to a TCXO.
The technology incorporates a thermistor with a traditional quartz crystal and, according to Rakon, delivers performance unmatched in the industry. This, says the company, is due to the combination of its GPS grade crystal manufacturing technology, coupled with Rakon's ability to perform high resolution frequency versus temperature testing in mass production.
The device is comprised of a 2.5 x 2mm high performing AT cut crystal with a thermistor for temperature sensing in a single ceramic package. The package has been specifically designed to achieve the required thermal coupling between the thermistor and the quartz crystal. Rakon states that the RXT2520AT offers 'significant' reduction in board space and is manufactured to specified temperature characteristics. It is available in 19.2 to 52MHz over operating temperature ranges of -30 to 85°C and -40 to 105°C.
The device is currently in mass production and has been designed into chipsets for wireless devices such as smart phones and tablet pcs, as well as automotive and communication applications.
