Dell bans E-waste entering developing countries
Dell has become the first computer manufacturer to place a formal prohibition on the transport of waste electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE) to third world countries.
Environmental groups hope that the company's announcement will send a message to other manufacturers to be more responsible for the disposal of their electronics waste.
Dell, which already refuses to export E-waste to developing countries, has tightened its policies by updating its definition of non working parts. This now includes WEEE made from any material and means a ban on all electronic waste sent outside of developed nations.
Barbara Kyle, national coordinator of the Electronics Takeback Coalitionm said: "This is a very significant announcement. What Dell's doing is drawing a very sharp and clear line and saying they won't cross it, in a way that is just much brighter and clearer than the way anyone else does it."
