Digital Britain
The government has published an action plan to secure the UK’s position at the forefront of digital and communications industries.
Digital Britain has been devised to take advantage of the £52billion generated annually by the digital and communications sectors.
The interim report from communications minister, Lord Stephen Carter contains over 20 recommendations including ensuring everyone in the UK has broadband by 2012, probably at a speed of 2Mb per second.
"We will develop plans for a digital Universal Service Commitment to be effective by 2012, delivered by a mixture of fixed and mobile, wired and wireless means," the report said. "Subject to further study of the costs and benefits, we will set out our plans for the level of service which we believe should be universal."
At present, 1.75million households do not have access to 2Mb broadband over a BT network.
