Digital gyroscope delivers ‘ultimate’ in motion sensing realism
1 min read
STMicroelectronics has expanded its motion sensor portfolio with a new three axis digital output gyroscope.
Housed in a 4 x 4 x 1mm package, the L3GD20 is said to combine high sensing resolution with high immunity to audio noise and vibrations, enabling more realistic motion sensing user interfaces in mobile phones, tablets, game consoles and other smart consumer devices.
The device has a resonant frequency above the audio bandwidth and is immune to both mechanical vibrations and audio noise. It has a single sensing structure for motion measurement along all three orthogonal axes, which ST says increases sensing accuracy, reliability and output stability.
The L3GD20 provides a 16bit data output, together with additional embedded digital features such as configurable low and high pass filters. It includes power down and sleep modes and an embedded first in first out memory block. According to ST, it can operate with any supply voltage between 2.4 and 3.6V.
