Digital voltage regulator minimises space and energy usage

Ericsson has introduced a 40A PMBus compliant POL single in line voltage regulator. Said to be the industry's first, the BMR464-SIP is designed for applications where board space is at a premium.
As well as enabling vertical mounting, the regulator can be configured and monitored via the standard PMbus communication protocol and the company's graphical user interface. Built in energy optimisation algorithms have been implemented to reduce energy consumption. Ericsson claims the device reduces footprint to less than 2.5cm2.
Primary end use applications for the regulator include network routers, data storage and AdvancedTCA boards. Power density is rated at 53W/cm2. The module accepts input voltages from 4.5 to 14V and has an output voltage range of 0.6 to 3.3V. Typical efficiency is rated at 97.2% at 5Vin, 3.3Vout and 50% load.
Patrick Le Fèvre, marketing and communication director of Ericsson Power Modules, said: "We believe this industry first, a PMbus compliant 40A/132W SIP voltage regulator with a footprint of only 2.5cm2, will help designers meet demands in space critical applications that are featuring progressively higher board densities."
