Dynamic random access memory (DRAM) content in tablet devices is set to grow 147% in 2011 to an average 676MB, according to research by IHS iSuppli.
The market analyst reports that the average DRAM content in the platforms during 2011 will be about two and a half times more than last year's 274MB. It forecasts that expansion will continue into 2012 when DRAM in tablets will average approximately 1.3GB and by 2015 will have similar content to that of today's laptops, reaching 3.7GB. This spread equates to a Compound Annual Growth Rate of 68% from 2010 to 2015.
Apple – a dominant force in the tablet market - included only 512MB of DRAM in its iPad 2, pictured. However, IHS believes that if the next version features a Retina camera display similar to the iPhone and iPod Touch the DRAM content is likely to jump to 1GB. This, it reports, would alter the forecast and result in even higher content growth.
DRAM growth in smart phones is projected to grow 62% in 2011.
