Elpida begins sampling ‘industry’s first’ 25nm DRAM
Elpida Memory has started sample shipments of what it claims is the smallest chip now available in the DRAM semiconductor industry.
According to the Japanese memory specialist, the new 25nm DDR3 SDRAM chip offers a 15% lower current usage compared to the company's current 30nm generation products and features one of the highest data transfer rates in the industry.
Announced in May this year, the chip is now being shipped with a memory capacity of 2Gbit. A 25nm 4Gbit DDR3 SDRAM is expected to become commercially available by the end of 2011.
Elpida is targeting the device at pc and server applications, as well as for use in data centers and other facilities that perform information processing tasks on a large scale. Additional applications include smartphones, tablet pcs, notebooks and flat screen tvs.
