embedded world: Freescale launches smart meter design
1 min read
Freescale Semiconductor is launching its new smart meter reference design at the 2011 embedded world exhibition & conference. The MK30X will be showcased as part of the company's Smart Energy Wall display and is being offered as a high performance solution for power measurement in single phase, two wire installations.
According to Freescale, the smart meter addresses issues of accuracy and cost by incorporating efficient analogue to digital converters, an embedded programmable gain amplifier, a shunt sensing circuit implementation and bill of materials. In addition, it features firmware based on an MQX real time operating system, a 128bit identification and FlexMemory to provide every meter with an individual identifier and tamper detection.
At the heart of the reference design is the 32bit Kinetis MK30X256 mcu based on the ARM Cortex-M4 core. The core is optimised to provide effective support of 32bit processors and enable fast Fourier transform based on metering algorithms which calculate metering quantities from elementary voltage and current harmonics. Customisation is available using the built in lcd and there are several types of communication interfaces, including the ZigBee network, for remote collection of data.
