Freescale launches 22 micros

In a move designed to meet growing need for connectivity and higher performance, Freescale has added 22 models to its microcontroller range. Of these, 10 are added to its 32bit ColdFire portfolio, whilst another 12 join the ColdFire microprocessor line up. According to the company, the additions provide designers with a range of cost effective low power connectivity options, as well as upgraded software tools.
The first part of the announcement covers extensions to the MCF5223x, MCF5221x and MCF51QE families, with applications including security, barcode scanners, medical pumps/monitors, environmental monitoring and remote data collection.
David Niewolny, product marketing manager with Freescale’s TSPG microcontroller business, said: “These parts make it quick and easy to get up and running. And we have included pin, tool and peripheral compatibility with other ColdFire mcus.”
Fully featured evaluation and cost effective demonstration kits will be available for the MCF5221x, MCF5223x and MCF51QE families. The development systems contain an interactive DVD with software examples, walk throughs, training material and application notes to speed learning and development. Complimentary versions of CodeWarrior Development Studio also are included on the DVD.
Meanwhile, there are 12 microprocessors added in the shape of the MCF5445x range. Described by Niewolny as ‘high performance, highly integrated and low power’, the parts feature up to 410MIPS and are intended to compete with existing ARM based devices. They also come with an enhanced MAC which, says Niewolny, can replace an external dsp.
“We are enabling 8bit users to move to 32bit,” Niewolny concluded, “but we are also ensuring our high end customers have a road map.”
