Fuel efficient cars drive automotive ic growth
According to a report by IC Insights, the shift towards more fuel efficient cars is driving growth in the automotive ic market as increasing numbers of semiconductors are used per vehicle.

The report forecasts that the automotive ic market will grow 8% to $19.6billion in 2012, up from $18.2bn in 2011. It is then predicted to grow to $27.3bn in 2015, which represents an average annual growth of 11% from 2011 to 2015.
Although hybrid and electric models still only account for a small amount of new shipments, the semiconductor content is much greater per vehicle.
The report states that semiconductor content per vehicle is forecast to increase to $380 in 2012, an increase of 9% from $350 in 2011. This is expected to increase 11% annually between 2009 and 2015, reaching $495 per vehicle at the end of the forecast period.
IC Insights forecasts that in 2015, full electric vehicles will contain approximately twice the semiconductor content of a standard car.
