Gartner upgrades semiconductor outlook
Worldwide semiconductor revenue will total $226billion in 2009 – an 11.4% decline from 2008's figure – according to the latest forecast from Gartner. The forecast improves upon Garnter's previous forecast, in which it expected 2009 revenue to drop by 17%.
On the back of what it calls 'amazingly strong' consumer spending, Gartner now expects semiconductor revenues in 2010 to grow by 13% to $255bn, returning to 2008 levels.
According to the company, the most significant changes came from assps, memory and compute microprocessors; all benefiting from growing strength in the pc market.
Gartner analyst Bryan Lewis, pictured, said: "Consumer high tech spending has been amazingly strong, given we are in the greatest recession of our lifetime." He added that inventory replenishment, government stimulus packages - especially in China - and outstanding price elasticity on consumer products clearly helped drive this strong recovery.
