Gennum acquires fabless IC company

Gennum has acquired Nanotech Semiconductor, a UK based fabless IC company specialising in mixed signal ICs for fibre optic communications.

The $34million deal will enable Gennum to offer 100Mb/s to 100Gb/s optical IC solutions for high volume applications such as Ethernet, PON, telecom and consumer optics. The company plans to utilise Nanotech's low cost cmos technology with its high performance SiGe technology to address optical networking markets 'from inception to maturity'. "Gennum expects this combined portfolio to deliver highly differentiated optical products that capture a greater portion of the silicon content in applications such as telecommunications, networking, fibre to the home and consumer connectivity," said Dr Franz Fink, pictured president and ceo of Gennum. "By simplifying the supply chain, we can now provide our customers with one of the most complete optical transceiver IC portfolios spanning all data rates."
