Global reception claimed for chip

By developing a complete rf, host interface and software demodulation solution for pcs, Mirics says any notebook pc equipped with its technology will be able to receive all global analogue and digital broadcast standards. The solution, called FlexiTV, also enables a sub $5 bill of materials for a PCTV MiniCard.

Simon Atkinson, the company’s ceo, said: “FlexiTV enables a flexible processor based solution for pc mini cards, dongles and, ultimately, motherboards, supporting reception of global tv and radio whilst reducing the cost and size challenges of supporting multistandard reception. “We believe that FlexiTV is the enabling solution that will see tv and radio reception – a compelling consumer offering – becoming a standard feature on all notebook pcs.” FlexiTV comprises a hostbased software demodulator paired with a SmartTuner, which performs multiband rf tuning and digital interfacing. The MSi3101, the first in a series of SmartTuner products, combines Mirics’ MSi001 polyband tuner and its MSi2500 USB interface. The MSi001 enables reception from 150KHz to 1.9GHz, whilst the MSi2500 integrates a/d conversion, optimised digital signal processing, a control host and USB2.0 connectivity.
