HP leads oem consumption
The top 10 oems consumed $92billion of semiconductors in 2008, according to market analyst Gartner. The company says this comprises one third of all semiconductor consumption, but adds the consumption was 3.8% less than in 2007.
HP was the leading consumer, purchasing $16.5bn worth of parts, while Apple saw consumption increase by 20% to $7bn and number 7 in the list, with its semiconductor consumption boosted by strong computer and phone sales – including the iPhone (pictured). The leading applications remain pcs and mobile phones, while the top application areas remain data processing and communications electronics, which accounted for 71% of the semiconductors consumed by the top 10 oems.
The report showed that HP was the major customer for dram, while Apple was one of the top two purchasers of NAND flash.
According to Gartner analyst Alfonso Velosa: “Changes in these oems' business or contractual average selling price are a fundamental element for the major memory firms’ product and business strategies and have a major influence on their gross margins.”
