IBM, Semtech launch sensor system with 15km data range
Looking to take advantage of opportunities unfolding from Internet of Things applications, IBM and Semtech have announced what they call a significant advancement in wireless technology.
The move, which combines IBM software and Semtech hardware, has created a system capable of transmitting data over distances of up to 15km.
IBM has launched a software development kit – called Mote Runner – which runs on Semtech's SX1272 rf chip.
The SX127x will be used for end nodes, while the SX130x will be applied in gateways and both have power consumption low enough to run from batteries. By adopting an adaptive link rate, battery lifetime is maximised and the capacity of the network is improved. Network robustness is also boosted.
"The biggest request we hear from our clients is longer battery life, low cost, ease of use and longer distances. With IBM, we now have an answer to all of these questions," said Hardy Schmidbauer, Semtech's wireless products director.
