AT&T, Cisco, GE, IBM and Intel have established the Industrial Internet Consortium (IIC), an open membership group that is focusing on a range of issues, including improved integration of the physical and digital worlds.
The not for profit group says it will take the lead in establishing interoperability across various industrial environments for a more connected world.
As founding members, AT&T, Cisco, GE, IBM and Intel will each hold permanent seats on an elected IIC Steering Committee, along with four other elected members.
The IIC says it will encourage innovation by: creating test beds for real world applications; delivering reference architectures and case studies; influencing the global standards development process; facilitating open forums to share and exchange ideas; and building confidence around new and innovative approaches to security.
Dr Richard Soley, pictured, executive director of the IIC, said: "The Industrial Internet is ushering in a new era of explosive industry growth and innovation, unlike anything we've seen in decades."
Dr Soley, who is also chair of the Object Management Group (OMG), which will manage the IIC's activities, added: "OMG has spearheaded technological developments that have enabled – and will continue to enable – the Industrial Internet. We are applying our 25 years of experience to the IIC to set the groundwork for the technological revolution to come."
