Industrial semi sales drop by 3% over Q1

Sales of industrial semiconductors through European distribution channels declined 6% in Q3 compared to those of Q3 2011. Stated by Distributors' and Manufacturers' Association of Semiconductor Specialists – or DMASS – to be €1.41billion, sales were also 3% lower than in Q2 2012.
Sales in Western Europe remained weak, said the organisation. In Germany, sales dropped by 11.9% to €469million, while those in Italy declined by 15.3% to €116m. For the first time in years, said DMASS, the UK has outperformed Italy, with declining by 4.2% to €123m. By contrast, Russian sales grew by 20.1% to €64m and those in Israel rose by 22.1% to €54m.
Georg Steinberger, pictured, DMASS' chairman, said: "Many German customers, specifically in automotive and industrial automation, had full inventories after the 2011 allocation and have been more careful in ordering. It remains to be seen whether the export oriented German high tech industry can continue to benefit from a considerable better Asian economy and a certain Euro weakness.
"The continued decline in the average selling price and the relatively stable volume of components sold suggest the weakness is only partially due to the lower demand and more likely to be a factor of over capacity in standard products."
