Intel expands its wearable device focus with acquisition
Intel has completed the acquisition of BASIS Science, a developer of wearable devices for health and wellness applications including the BASIS Carbon Steel fitness tracker, pictured. The deal is said to accelerate Intel's wearable products focus and to extend its capabilities, as well as bringing new technology.
"The acquisition of BASIS Science provides immediate entry into the market with a leader in health tracking for wearable devices," said Mike Bell, general manager of Intel's New Devices Group. "As we accelerate our position in wearables, we will build upon this foundation to deliver products that bring people greater utility and value. I'm confident that our collective resources and expertise positions us well for the future."
Intel demonstrated a range of wearable reference devices at the recent Consumer Electronics Show, including smart earbuds, a smart headset and a smart wireless charging bowl. It also showed Edison, a Quark based computer housed in an SD card form factor and featuring built in wireless capabilities. According to Intel, this will enable rapid innovation and product development.
