Intel launches ‘smallest’ 3G modem, targets IoT applications
Intel has launched the XMM6255, a 3G modem said to have been designed with Internet of Things applications in mind. Described by the company as the world's smallest standalone 3G modem, the part is said to be suited for application in devices with small, unconventional form factors, including networked sensors, smart meters and wearables.
The XMM6255 features the X-GOLD625 baseband and its integrated power management unit, as well as the Intel SMARTi UE2P, a transceiver with an integrated 3G power amp.
Featuring a board area of about 300mm2, the device also boasts controls that protect against overheating, voltage spikes and overcurrents. The dual band HSPA modem supports downlink rates of up to 7.2Mbit/s and uplinks of up to 5.76Mbit/s. Quad band 2G functionality is available as an option.
