Intel to ship first LTE chip this month

As part of its strategy to become a leader in wireless, Intel has revealed plans to ship its first multimode LTE processor this month.

The XMM 7160 can be equipped to work on as many as 15 LTE spectrum bands, as well as on 2G and 3G networks. Speaking at a press and analyst briefing at Intel's headquarters on Monday, Hermann Eul, pictured, vp and general manager of the company's mobile and communications group, said: "For us, it is the clear strategy, the clear plan, to go into a leadership position, and we are currently in the transition to do that." The first iteration of the 7160 will be equipped for Category 3 LTE, with throughput as high as 100Mb/s. An updated version, due to ship by the end of this year, will offer Category 4 LTE, which can go as high as 150Mb/s.
