Intel to slash 5% of its workforce

Intel is to cut 5,000 jobs worldwide, as its enterprise business continues to struggle.

Despite signs in the past few months that the pc sector is stabilising, the chip giant said it expects a year of flat sales. Revenues at its division which makes chips for desktop computers fell 4% in 2013. Company spokesman Chris Kraeuter commented: "This is part of aligning our human resources to meet business needs." Just last week, Intel announced that it would not be opening its new 14nm chip facility in Arizona. On Thursday it reported a 6% rise in Q4 profit to $2.6billion, while revenue increased 3% to $13.8bn.
