Intel turns attention to tablet technology
Intel plans to launch more than 10 new tablet computer models that run on its own chips at the Computex computer trade show, Taipei (pictured). By shifting its focus from pcs to mobile devices, the move appears to be an attempt to compete with ARM, whose IP designs are currently the industry standard.
According to Intel's general manager for Asia Pacific, Navin Shenoy, more than 35 tablets based on Intel chips could be available by the end of this year.
Intel's Oak Trail chips, designed specifically for tablets, are based on Android, MeeGo and Windows operating system, but the company also plans to introduce a chip designed for smartphones called Medfield. This, however, will not be available until 2012.
Computex opens on 31 May in Taiwan.
