Linear buys wireless sensor networking specialist

In a move that will extend its wireless sensor networking capability, Linear Technology has bought Dust Networks, a specialist in low power radio and software technology.
Erik Soule, Linear's vp of signal conditioning and high frequency products, said: "Dust Networks offers the lowest power radio technology and most complete networking software for building industrial grade wireless sensor networks. Combined with Linear's precision low-power sensor interface products and energy harvesting technology, we can now offer the industry's highest performance remote monitoring solutions."
'Smart Dust' was first conceived by Dr Kris Pister, Dust's founder and chief technologist, as a simple way to deploy intelligent wireless sensors. The company has also pioneered SmartMesh networks that comprise a self forming mesh of nodes – or 'motes' – which collect and relay data, and a network manager that sends data to the host application.
All motes in a SmartMesh network are designed to run on batteries for years, allowing sensors to be placed where they are needed using a 'peel and stick' approach.
