MCUs offer 32bit performance at 8bit cost

Infineon's has commenced volume production of its ARM Cortex-MO based XMC1000 microcontrollers.
The MCUs come in a VQFN-24 package and are designed to offer 32bit performance at an 8bit price point.
Maurizio Skerlj, senior director of industrial and multimarket microcontrollers at Infineon, commented: "With the XMC1000 microcontrollers, Infineon is creating a decisive incentive for switching architecture from 8 to 32bit – particularly for motor drives, sensor and actuator applications that need to be highly compact.
"No rival microcontroller of the XMC1000 in a VQFN-24 package currently offers this much functionality in such a confined space."
The XMC1000 MCUs measure 4 x 4mm and as a consequence the development board is one of the world's smallest. It also only costs around €5 (approx. £4).
Skerlj added: "Companies did not pay enough attention to development kits in the past. People might have good ideas but if you only have evaluation kits costing hundreds of euros then you are blocking their creativity. We are selling this [development board] at cost."
